The Euros in Germany, the Olympics in Paris, and Wimbledon right here in London – 2024 is shaping up to be a stellar year for sports. With the football now into the latter stages, we’re thrilled to see a variety of fans and their countries supporting their teams, right here in the capital. For the England supporters, the question is, will the trophy return “home”?
But sport has the power to bring people together like nothing else, and we love being able to bring iconic sporting events to life. In celebration of this amazing year in sport, our sports animation company is taking a look back at some of our fantastic past sports projects.
So, ready, get set, let’s go…
Sports Animation to Inspire - Carl Nassib’s Coming Out Story
One of our most inspiring recent projects as a sports animation company was a 2D animation we created for BBC Sport during LGBTQ History Month. The project was a short film featuring NFL star Carl Nassib, the first openly gay player on an active NFL roster.
We used our expertise to recreate Carl’s real-life coming out story, intertwining it with the narrative of a teen, gaining the confidence to come out themselves thanks to Carl’s courageous actions.
This is what makes animation such an effective creative tool. It allowed BBC Sport to recreate a historic sporting moment, opening it up to new audiences and inspiring countless people in the process.
It was the perfect medium to retell this event, with the teen’s story creating the emotional heart of the video. All in all the project showed the impact of Carl’s brave decision on young people around the world and in helping them come to terms with their sexual identity.
Sports Animation to Add that Bit Extra - WTA 50-Year Anniversary
With Wimbledon well under way, we thought it would be the perfect time to look back on a project our sports animation company completed for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). Founded in 1973 by tennis legend Billie Jean King, the WTA has been a trailblazer in advancing women’s tennis. We were thrilled to use our creative talents to help celebrate their impressive 50th anniversary milestone.
Our team produced stunning motion graphics and art-deco-inspired illustrations of the famous tennis players throughout the WTA’s history. These visuals were featured in an online documentary series that revisited some of the association’s most iconic players. Streaming on Amazon (with over 1 million views), each episode counted down the top 50 tennis stars who have shaped the game into what it is today.
This project highlighted how animation can enhance the storytelling of a brand’s rich history, to make it more engaging and memorable. When you get the animation just right it adds that creative flair and polished touch to your sports brand’s image and makes a far greater impact on the audience.
Sports Animation to Explain - Kick It Out
But it isn’t just about recreating events or adding depth to your sports brand. It’s also perfect for explaining complex or detailed information in an easily digestible manner.
Kick It Out, a national charity fighting to eliminate all forms discrimination in football, were looking to promote reporting racist and discriminatory behaviour through their app and online reporting system.
Our solution was an expert explainer video, breaking down the steps to report such incidents, showing how easy the process is and what happens after your report has been made. This project demonstrates how you can effectively convey important information in a creative and engaging way.
As a sports animation company, it was an honour to work with such a renowned charity and with the Euros in full swing and thousands of football fans in the stands cheering on their team, the need to highlight this issue is particularly relevant.
